About Me!

Hello! My name is Anastasia Claire Arrieta, and I’m currently a junior at Polytechnic School in Pasadena. I come from a diverse background; my father was born and raised in Mexico City, while my mother is originally from Ukraine. I was born in Philadelphia, and after spending my first year in Mexico City,  my family relocated to Pasadena, where I have resided ever since.

My first languages are Spanish and Russian, and there’s often friendly debate between my parents about which language was truly the "first." I now speak Spanish fluently at a native level, and my Russian is conversational. Although I didn’t start speaking English until I was four, I became fluent by growing up in English-dominated communities. Additionally, I am studying French at an advanced-beginner level, a skill I have cultivated through my French classes at Poly, where I have been learning since sixth grade.

My Connection to PolyGlobal

Courses:

I am currently enrolled in French IV at Poly, and I plan to take World Music next year. This choice will help me fulfill the Global Scholars/GIP credits required for the cohort while also broadening my perspective as an aspiring performer. I believe that to become a truly excellent artist, it is essential for me to explore and study music beyond the styles I grew up with. By examining music from a global context, I will gain a better understanding of the diverse expressions and cultural influences that shape this art form.

South Africa '24 Reflection:

I had the absolute honor of traveling to South Africa last March. Participating in this program taught me several invaluable lessons, and my experience in Cape Town will never be forgotten. In preparation for our program, the group spent several months researching pop culture, historical context, and the geographical features of South Africa. One of the highlights of the trip was our hike to the peak of Lion's Head. Although hiking about three and a half miles in the hot sun could have been challenging, engaging conversations with my peers made it relatively easy. This experience, along with many others, taught me the importance of connection and perseverance. Another significant moment was the time we spent with the students from iThuba and Leap High School. It was impressive and inspiring how quickly we all connected with our new friends. Listening to their stories, hobbies, and interests deepened our bond, and I now consider many of them lifelong friends. I’m still in contact with several of them—thank you, Instagram! This experience taught me to step outside my comfort zone and be the first to say hello, as that simple greeting can lead to meaningful and impactful friendships. Finally, our time in the Langa township instilled in me a sense of gratitude and a reminder to never take what I have for granted. Observing how many Langa residents live and their passions inspired me to embrace my own passions and utilize my resources to help others do the same. I am immensely grateful for my time in this program, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Affiliation With Global Organizations:

In terms of global organizations, I would say that I have been most involved with iThuba. Working with iThuba and the Leap students last March was an incredible, life-changing experience that I will forever cherish. I hope to continue to contribute to their mission and their program in the future
